I remember going when I was 11 years old with the school, and I liked it than :D But too young to actually know of the cost to enter or anything.

I went to the Big Pit years ago. When we visited there were ex-miners cleaning peoples cars. When we returned to our car from the mine, they pointed out that we had left our car unlocked and they had kept an eye on it for us. So I gave the guys at the Big Pit a Big Tip. :D

Thanks all, it wasn't until we got there yesterday morning that I remembered the Welsh Museums are all free, lol!

Had a fab day and it wasn't too cold 420 ft underground! Very quiet too for a Bank Holiday weekend!

Yes the Welsh Male Voice Choir were there, sadly not cleaning the whole car but doing windscreens to raise money to go on tour. I gave them a couple of quid and came back to find they'd done all the windows!
  • Is there a lot of steep walking & steps or do lifts take underground? Unfortunately I'm disabled but would love to go and have a look around.

Happy_saver, probably best that you read the Big Pit Access Guide before you go.

Happy_saver - no steep walking or upwards steps but you do need to be sure-footed - there are some low ceilings so you would have to bend (you do have a hard hat with a light but you have a 5kg battery and gas mask around your waist) and about 100 steps going down at one point though there is a handrail.

Towards the end the floor does get a little slippy due to the water and the walk takes 50 minutes - you go up and down by the miners shaft cage, but they do advise against anyone who has difficulty walking so it depends on your disability.

    Hi Skint Catt,
Unfortunately it makes it 'no go' for me. Thanks for giving me the detailed info, much appreciated.
