Natwest charges... GRrrr!

Please can anyone help me?

Natwest sent my recent statement, informing me that I am going to have two charges taken from my account on Sep 1st. When I went into the bank to query them, I was told that one charge was because I went overdrawn by approx 5-6 pound- as soon as I realised this had happened I put money into my account. I was also told that my cheque guarantee card had to be used as there werent enough funds for a cheque I put in my account. HOWEVER>> first, the statement indicates the WRONG cheque number AND I had put money in the account at 4:20pm to cover it, but I was charged as the money wasnt put in before 4pm that day!!!!!! !!!!!!?!

Can anyone tell me who I write to as clearly they are taking the mick! I was told several times, that my bank are not allowed to refund ANY charges at this point!

Also, what would happen if I just took all my money out and closed the account before the charge? They are a bunch of eejits.

this doesn't make sense to me. If you use your cheque guarantee card to guarantee a cheque then it would be paid irrespective of whether there was funds in the account to cover it or not,

I'm really sorry, I still have no idea what you are talking about apart from the last bit, ie 4pm but you should have told the cashier it was to cover a cheque going out cos they would have told you it was too late.

Branches may not be able to do so now. But I don't understand you so I can't advise much yet until I understand.

You can't because the account will only close if including charges there is a positive balance

Please explain more cos I don't really understand what you mean but when I do I can advise.

If you put money at 4.20 you was too late you need to pay the money in before 3.30.

Branches dont refund charges anymore lending appear to have more power than branch managers when it comes to charges now adays.

I dont think you should be complaining to anyone you went overdrawn and was subsequently charged for going overdrawn without an authorised borrowing Facility.

You wouldnt be able to close the accont unless you paid the charges. If you withdraw the funds you have available then you would just keep going into a negative balance which will then spiral out of control with more charges.

My top tip for today is dont go overdrawn then you wont get charged.

Stclair, you know I would pick up on that last bit(not usually miss them). If the charges were FAIR then I would agree with you but since the fairness of them is in dispute then I don't.

You need to have funds in the account to cover any cheques prior to writing them out.

Cheque Guarantee Card means that you don't, willo.
Awful as it is to say that, but the card guarantees payment on a minimum of say £100 so that is 25 cheques for an amount of £2500.00 the bank has agreed to give you to use.

Im not bothered whether there fair or not to be honest. However if people managed there finances correctly then they wouldnt get charged in the first place. In this case the OP was negligent and was subsequently charged for there actions.

And that is the problem the bank you work for and the bank I used to work for has got. They didn't care about whether they were fair or not. What annoys people is not just that they are fair. and that is not entirely about the reason for the return of an item BUT the interplay of charges so for example, you go over the overdraft and you get another charge even though the loss to the bank is in pennies.

I'd be interested in your views on Payment Protection Insurance(PLP) to be honest.

However if people managed there finances correctly then they wouldnt get charged in the first place.
If you have a DD going out for £5.00 and you are short but maybe 50p you get charged £38.00 and then £28.00 maintenance charge and the DD is not paid. So if the charge was fair then it would be say £3.00 and possibly interest so your finances are directly affected for MONTHS because of potentially being 50p short. That is what annoys people. They make one mistake and the bank refunds but they make 2 and don't notice and it will be £66.00 less for next month. Walk in someone shoes and don't walk over their bodies and you might get there.
In this case the OP was negligent and was subsequently charged for there actions.
Since I don't understand the OP and I don't understand the banks' view as was stated then I can't form an opinion as to whether they were negligent, whether they made a mistake or such like.
Stclair, have you worked in a branch? And have you lost hair dealing with a customer?

You may be correct but if you guarantee a cheque you have no funds to cover then charges are involved. Paying in on the same day may still result in a charge unless you paid in on the previous day.

Telephone the lending department - through the Actionline telephone banking service. They have the power to refund these charges. Be nice to the person you are dealing with. It helps.

If you have an existing claim for charges it can be added to that - if not just say this is silly - half the time NW lending officers agree and refund.

Branch managers have zero power in lending these days .. it's down to the computer's decision ... with the lending officers having a small amount of leeway.
