single mum student and childcare costs

Help!
Can anyone advise please?
My daughter is 24 and is a single mum (baby 8 months old) on income support. She's got a place at college but has been refused funding for childcare by the Job Centre. Without her childcare costs being met she can't go to college. Can she appeal against the decision? Is there anywhere else she might be able to get funding?

  • The college may be able to help with her childcare costs - it depends on what course she is doing.

We have students who are turned down by the Jobcentre, but unfortunately they tell them they can't get any other help rather than directing them to the advisors at college.

She needs to contact the advisors at her college asap.
  • Thank you. The student advisor has said that funding isn't available but we'll go back and try again.

It varies enormously from college to college. My previous college would only have made a very small contribution to childcare in this situation.

What course will your daughter be doing?

As posted above varies from college to college however I do know that my local college simply just ran out of funding and some people missed out. Just due to the fact that the intake of students were that high. I also know that the course I was on last year is having to turn people away as course is full.
  • Can you you not claim on child tax credits, I thought you could claim the costs on this.

Only if you're working for at least 16 hours per week.
  • Doesn't going to college for 16 hours count then?
