Paypal messed up now Im getting the brunt of it

I sold an item on Paypal for £135 including postage but due to problems with Paypal I had to refundthem (last time they froze my account i didnt get my money)

Anyway the buyer said they would send a cheque as they preferred this to Paypal, which came yesterday, bank said it wont clear until next Wednesday.

Ive had texts off the buyer saying their mortgage has bounced due to the paypal payments going out of his account.

Today I get a call asking why he hadnt got the cleaner as he wanted it by this weekend. I think he expects me to deliver it before the cheque clears? But after his texts yesterday and him hanging up on me today I dont trust this option as I suspect it may bounce now as Ive clearly annoyed him all due to circumstances out of my control

He owns his own buiness so Im concerened why he doesnt understand why I wont post before cheque clears, why he would not know or use postal order if he wants it urgently and why he doesnt earn enough to cover his mortgage and this purchase

I just needed to rant as I feel so under pressure and I want the thing gone as much as the buyer does but aint risking not getting paid!

So, you refuse paypal and insist that buyer uses an unsafe payment method and them blame them for all their problems.

I know on another thread you basically told me my advice was terrible and I should stay out of things as I had no idea, but really, I think you have gone about this the wrong way.

Sort your paypal, find out why you are frozen or stop selling until you can use it again.

  • Check your paypal account to make sure that his payment isn't in there (Paypal can change almost hourly and is not always accurate, just because it wasn't in there last time you lookes, doesn't mean it's not there). If it is there then make sure you refund him.

You are right to wait until the cheque clears, don't dispatch anything until it does - you are 100% correct, if he wanted it fast then he should have chosen to pay with postal order. Send the item recorded too if you can, it sounds like it could be worth the extra £.

(BTW - just because he runs a business doesn't mean he can automatically pay his mortgage, business' are going under all the time).

After that - contact paypal and try to sort it out, sounds like it would make your life easier.

Its not there I have refunded him.

It was a mutual decision to refund the payment. My paypal account is ok now but everytime he paid me they flagged the payment as unauthorised so held the money and limited my account.

I've had similar problems with Paypal, after I had this issue they decided to hold all the funds in the account in 'reserve' for 30 days because of a fraud suspicion. I must have been a terrible fraudster because there was only £7.11 in there :rotfl:

The thread was a while ago but i recall you asking that certain users on here never ever give you advice again as we didn't understand paypal. The thread was contentious and the abuse team removed it.

I do know that paypal can be problematic, but it does pay to understand the rules so you can avoid most of the problems.

My advice in this instance would be to try and get your paypal account sorted ASAP and to stop selling until it is OK.

As for this buyer, stay really polite and apologetic, mention that cheques will take 4 working days to clear and allowing for the bank holiday on monday (make sure you remind him about that!) the funds should be available to you on xx date. You will therefore have the item packed and ready to go on that date and will send through tracking details as soon as you have them available. I am concerned though that the bank said Wednesday, if you paid it in yesterday then the 4th working day for clear for funds is Thursday?

If he funded the original paypal payment via a bank account then yes he will have paid that in addition to the cheque, but if he is paypal savvy he would have known that was the case and possibly should have liased with you to wait until he had the refund before sending the cheque so he didn't pay twice.

I should just add that if you are concerned that he may try and bounce the cheque that you do confirm on a recorded line with your bank on working day 4 that it is clear for funds before you ship. The 2-4-6 rules )assuming your bank have signed up) means cheques start earning interest on day 2, clear for funds on day 4 and clear against fraud on day 6. Day 1 is today and day 2 is not until Tuesday.

I would assume you are likely to get a neg here anyway so don't be bullied into posting too early. Even if you posted today he could still be aggrieved enough at having paid two lots from his bank account and may still leave a neg. Since that is the worst that can happen you might as well take a few extra days and make sure your funds are safe.
