I assume your with Virgin Cable not Virgin National.

http://www.18185.co.uk/mobilerates using their 0808 freephone number or if you have inclusive landline minutes you could use www.localphone.com
  • I use cheapest chat they use a national pre-fix no. so don't forget to include it in your call plan. i.e only 60mins....you will be charged if you use the number outside of your call plan.

Other non-geographical override numbers will probably be charged on top of the rate quoted on some sites.
  • I'm using Budgetcall on the 0844 200 4040 number which is 0.5p from a BT line, however Virgin had been charging just over 1.1p a min until my latest bill - it's now 3p per min !!!

So what's the cheapest 0844 number to use anyone know ? Thanks in advance

The cheapest is, of course, ½p/minute - but only BT is guaranteed to charge that rate. As you have discovered, Virgin has decided to boost its profits by charging excessive rates for calling 0844 numbers.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
