Evenin' folks, a quick question. Does anybody know if you need to have R plates up in N.I if you have passed your test in England?

I believe you do.do they have anything similar in england?p plate or something?0

You don't need R-Plates up if you passed your test outside Northern Ireland ever. It's a stupid law since it's illegal for someone to drive at more than 45mph on a motorway.0

Hi, i passed my test when at uni in Scotland and was told that i had to use R plates when driving at home because my drivers licence was a Northern Irish one, that was about 5 years ago now though!0

I would suspect that because you were on a NI licence that information would be accurate. As for the thread starter I don't think you would need them but it would not do any harm to put them up!0 -

I think, according to law, that anyone who doesn't need L-plates or R-plates up is supposed to remove them before driving.0 -
As far as I understand if you have only pass3ed your test then yes you would need R plats, otherwise afeter whatever period you can take them down the answer is no.
In regards to law requiring you to take R/L plates down if you don't need them I'm not too sure. I had a friend who wasn't comfortable driving on carriageways so kept her R plates up for 6 months longer than needed. The reason for taking the plates down is, if you're child has just passed they obviously need R plates and can only go a certain speed. If when you get in the car and don't take the R plates down, and say was on a motorway doing 60mph, you could get fined, even though you don't need the plates.0 -
I remember getting a £5 fine back in 86 for just cutting the R out and sticking it on the window. The big R Plate really didnt look good on the MexicoWell I Love Tv And I Love T. Rex, I Can See Through Your Skirt I've Got X-Ray Spex0

The original poster mentioned they did their test in England so they are not required to display R-Plates even if they just passed their test. The English license is not governed by Northern Ireland law.0 -
I passed my test in Scotland (many many years ago!). At the time I did my test I was required to both learn, and demonstrate on my test, driving up to 60mph. I got a full NI licence when I came home a few months later and didn't display R plates - what would be the point of being tested on your ability to control a car at higher speeds and then be restricted to 45? It's much better than the ludicrous 'restrict everyone to 45mph and never teach them to drive faster' system that we have.
Basically, if the system in England is the same as Scotland (which I imagine it is) then you aren't required to display R plates.Norn Iron Club Member 3300
