Advice on overdrawn money with Natwest

Hi

I have recently overdrawn a very small amount of money from my Natwest account, 24p to be precise, after being sent a letter to acknowledge this i payed £500 into the account the same day.

I have just recieved a letter confirming that i will be charged £38 for being overdrawn along with a £20 'service' charge. I have yet to speak to Natwest about this but as you'd imagine i'd say the charge is an absolute joke considering the amount of money involved, Is there anything i should know before i challenge this?

I've had the account for over 10 years and not had this problem once, i've also recently opened an ISA and a savers account with them.

Any advice on this would be great, thanks in advance.

£38.00 is definitely an item unpaid which is not for going over the overdraft because since you paid in on the same day by cash then the maintenance charge is not made to your account. £20.00....hmmmm, have you got an advantage gold/Private account?

  • it's a current plus account.

I don't have an overdraft setup, i tried to pay for an item through Paypal (which i'm sure actually rejected payment in the past when funds weren't available) and ended up being 24p out.

The money was payed in on the same day i received the letter which was about 6 days made after the payment. I've also been told the charge should not be this much, the expected rate according to a friend is £28, i'm getting billed nearly £60

have another look at the letter as a £20 charge is non existent afaik. If the d/d bounced which you will be able to see from your statement or ask in the bank then you will just get a £38 charge. If the direct debit was paid then you will get £30 and £28.
  • been to the bank to discuss the charges, the £20 charge is apparently due to the account changing recently from a student account to a current plus account - it would normally have been £28.

I've managed to get them to waive the £38 charge but the girl i spoke to said that was the best she could do. Any reason i couldn't reclaim the £20 charge once it has been taken out?
