ebay selling....is it worth it???

Just a quick question to all you ebay professionals out there!! I am a SAHM with very limited access to childcare at the moment and I need to start earning a few pennies. Due to my husbands job (being most important as he earns a good salary) I can't work evenings or weekends so I am looking to do something flexible from home. I thought about becoming a trader on ebay. Now I have quite a bit of experience selling my own tat, kids clothes etc but never really made more of an effort than listing and hoping for the best.
Now my question is is ebay worth it?? I realise that there really isn;t a good strong competitor to ebay but the fees for ebay and paypal make it difficult to actually make any money as there are so many other seller to compete with.
I don;t actually have any particular products in mind at the moment.
I was also wondering how everyone is finding sales in the 'recession'?
THanks in advance

My sales are fine as are a lot of others. It all depends on stock really and what market you will be competing in. My main line is quite a small specialist area so not much competition. In areas such as clothes and childrens clothes there is huge amount of competition.0
