help with benefits please?

My boyfriend is on job seekers allowance (the new deal programme) and wants to attend college. He is 19.
The problem is that there is no college in the town he lives so would pay £6.50 per day for the bus. He could, however, come to the college in my town and live with me.
I live with my mum and sister and brother. He would be sharing my room. I am at college (18). My mum works 16 hrs per week and gets the rest of her money from tax credits and family allowance etc.
What benefits would he be entitled to and how would it affect my mums benefits (so he would need to pay my mum alot?)
Would it be easier if he got his own place here???
He has NO savings! Which is not good!

Does he plan on studying full time and at what level?0

Hows about this for a radical idea.
BF goes on freecycle and see's if he can secure a treader (push bike) or buy one second hand. BF uses bike to get to college and back.
BF saves £6.60 per day in travel costs and keeps fit in to the bargain.0 -
if your mam is claiming HB he would need to be declared but as he is under 25 and claiming JSA there would be no deductions, its wouldnt effect his JSA, he can still claim but he would need to check that in this situation u and him wouldnt be classed as living together where a joint income needed to be considered.0

There will be a college closer than that unless you live on a remote scottish island :rolleyes:Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession:o

He should contact the college and ask if there is any support available for transport to/from college. I'd be very surprised if there wasn't - many colleges offer support for bus passes/childcare etc as needed.
However, I get the feeling that his need to move in with you is related more to your wish to live together than his need to go to your local college. That aside, if he moves in with you, you will be living together and will be a couple for benefits purposes. Do you work/study? Does your mum get child benefit and child tax credit for you? Does she get housing and council tax benefit?0 -
