I've just had my first ever bank charge.

Due to a mix up in communication, a monthly standing order for £350 from our Halifax account, had not been cancelled as it was supposed to be.

Not the bank's fault, completely our own doing....I though OH had done it, he thought I had.

Anyway, this account had been run down so there was only approx £200 in it at the time and so the s/o was not paid. We've just had a message posted on our account saying they will charge us £35.

Is there anything we can do or do we just pay up? I'm not up to speed on the bank charges situation so don't know how strict they are at the moment.

If it has to be paid then so be it, it's a lesson to be more careful in future....however our account has always been run well, no overdraft, nothing like this has happened before so might they be lenient?

I had this with the co-op - I forgot a SO was coming out twice in once month when my wages get paid on the last friday of the month - when it flipped to a 5 week month £399 went out that I hadn't planned.

I knew I'd get a charge from the Co-op - but a week later got a letter saying if I put it back in credit within x days they would waive it on this occasion.....which I already had done as pay day had already been and gone by then.

This never happened until I was a higher tax payer

I'd give them a call and ask; if your account is well run then you never know; one of them might have got lucky last night and be a bit lenient.

Most banks will refund the charge on first error if you are a good customer. You just need to ask them.

I had to stifle a chuckle there whilst I was hold. :D

Anyway, upshot is the charge will be wiped 'as a goodwill gesture'. Happy days.
