I have 2MB NTL cable broadband and no phone line. I am using https://www.voip.co.uk for phone calls. If you buy their adapter for £50 this includes 12 months on their UK package - free calls evening/weekends and 2p per call at peak times.

A geographic number (your choice of location) is included. I opted to buy their adapter - it comes pre-configured, just plug it in and start dialing.

Alternatively if you use your own voip adapter it costs £19.99 for the year or £1.99 a month.

I would have to make an awful lot of peak calls to make £7.99 a month worthwhile.

If you are using ADSL which I take it you are with AOL Broadband, then you must still have a phone line as ADSL broadband is over the phone line.

People who have cable broadband don't need a phone line thus saving them £11 or so per month phone line rental, as cable broadband comes down a separate cable and not over the phone line.

This is why I just pay for broadband, no line rental and just pay for my VoIP service (€10 (Ten Euro) +16% VAT - every 120 days for 300 mins to landlines to many countries including the UK per week and then 1c/min over the 300mins per week - thats 50p per week for 300 mins and the credit can be used for chargeable calls).

£8 per month for Vonage is not what I'd call value for money, especially if you must keep your BT landline for and ADSL service, as you can get better deals using your ordinary line, even those on cable broadband, Vonage isn't particularly value for money either. Sometime many people can't see behind they hype.

    Hi all

    New boy here.

I'm currently with NTL paying £25.00 pm for Talk Unlimited 24 plus £17.99 for 1mbt Broadband. I also spend about £17.00 on average calling Mobiles. So my bill adds up to approx £60 + each Month. I decided to look for a better deal. While browsing I came across a Company called Vonage(Link below). They will give you free calls to UK and Ireland at only £5.99 for the first 6 Months and then £7.99 thereafter. So I contacted NTL and threatened to cancel, and to my surprise they reduced my Broadband to 9.99 pm. I'm thinking of canceling my home line saving £25.00, and just keeping my Broadband @ 9.99. I would then just have to pay Vonage £5.99 and they would supply me with the equipment free and free caller display. You get to pick a local number for incoming calls and unlike some VOIP companies you can dial 999. Going down this route would save me £300 a year. Has anyone heard of Vonage? Are they any good? I have attached a link below.

They are a very large US based VOIP provider. There are alternatives, if you purchase your own ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) you can use any SIP (Session initiation Protocol) provider. I use VOIPStunt one of the 20 or so Finerea branded products. Cost per month is lower than Vonage and the range of free countries is huge by comparison. Customer support and span might be an issue for you as this is a no frills operation. If you want quality UK support SIPGATE.CO.UK is worth a look, they provide free incoming VOIP and a UK number. Outgoing they are not as cheap as VOIPStunt et al but this is not a fair comparison as Sipgate is not a no frill provider.

The make and model of ATA you purchase determines the options for SIP providers you have. e.g. Sipura units have good multi SIP provider support. Also softphones (software for your PC or Mac) might be worth looking into.

Details about the options can be found in some of the long VOIP threads. There is no sticky or forum for VOIP so you will need to search the forums. Search on VOIPStunt or Speedtouch 716 and you will find some of my posts and questions as I went through this a few months ago.
