Bought a laptop - but batteries dead?

Hiya!
I bought a netbook of ebay the other day and received it today. All good, looks really looked after etc. Had full charge and used it for 5 hours before it dying on me with no warning, wouldn't turn on so I assumed battery had gone and plugged the charger in. I came back to it an hour later and took the charger out and it died within 30 seconds.
The battery doesn't want to charge at all on it. Have tried looking for solutions but to no avail.
Where do I stand ebay wise with this as I love the netbook but obviously it's useless without a battery that holds charge? It will cost me about £12 to send it back anyway.
I was thinking of asking the seller to go halves on a new battery (£20 each) but I don't think they will believe me!

Where do I stand with this? I haven't left feedback yet if that matters?

(can you tell it's my first ebay problem - please be gentle!!)

best thing to do would be to contact the seller and see what they say about it :)

Any chance it could be the mains charger?

ie, if you run it on the mains is it ok?

If it wasn't stated in the listing and the seller wont help you could open an SNAD claim via Paypal but they will get you to return it for a full refund.

If itll cost £12 to return it and £20 for the battery and other than the battery your happy. If the seller wont partially refund just keep it and leave appropriate DSRs

Just contact the seller and politely tell them the problem. For £12 return postage costs, it's hardly worth returning it, so if they won't pay for a new battery, or at least half, then just leave them negative feedback and buy yourself a battery.

Laptop / Netbook batteries are pretty poor anyhow, have 2x toshiba laptops, and 1x acer in the house.

Both the toshiba & acer laptop batteries are near to the end of there lifes. 100% charged, unplug charger and drops to 12-10% within seconds..

Its something to be expected, and the stuff you buy off eBay is usually someones old battery that was dead with the usual 'Untested' description meaning..'its dead, im ripping you off'

How old was the netbook? You need to take that into consideration when you buy secondhand. There is the other thread about about the iphone battery which was getting quite heated last time I looked.

Have a look in the Bios for battery calibration and run that. It may fix it.

My laptop's like that, only difference is I bought it knowing it was faulty (not from ebay). Doesn't bother me too much (except during thunder-storms, when I want to just unplug it but keep using it...), the missus' laptop's got a battery that doesn't work as well.

I'd consider how well the rest of the laptop works before negging the seller. If the rest of it's perfect, and you can get a battery for a few quid, I wouldn't worry too much.

Oh, you mean just the battery! I thought you meant the whole netbbok...

It does seem a bit strange that the seller could charge it so it lasted 5hr but when you did it it only lasted 30s. In fact it doesn't sound as if you got any charge into the battery.

I'd investigate further before handing over cash for a new battery
