Hi,
We've just spent a couple of months stripping our 1930's staircase! We have renovated the whole house and this, by far, has been the worst job (even worse then pulling down the ceilings)!
We started using a heat gun but its hard work and you have to be careful not to burn the wood! Then we got a cheap paint striper that was useless. Then we bought nitromors and that did the trick. I agree its horrible stuff and you need protective clothing but it works!
The paint stripping isnt the worst bit, the sanding is! Make sure you invest in an electric sander or two, saved us A LOT of work! Be prepared for every surface in your house to be covered in a coat of wood dust, even the ceilings.
Just a word of warning, if your house is more then 50 years old the paint may contain lead!
Even though its been a horrid job it does look lovely now, to replace it like for like would have cost a fortune!
Good luck with it!
