Power Problem

Hi.

I have a Compaq Presario laptop (dated 3 years or so now) and I have had a problem with recently.

I was using it yesterday(plugged in),and it just went off, the laptop would not turn back on while power lead was in the computer, but had no problem without it.
I assumed it was the fuse (in the power leads plug), and replaced it and it worked from there. Now it has just happened again..
I mean I don't want the laptop to go off again as it don't take turning off like that too well...
Help would be great.

Thanks.

Is the battery charging when you first replace the fuse? When you disconnect from the mains it should switch straight to battery, it should not 'go off''?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

If I read your post correctly, it can't have been caused by the fuse in the power supply because if that failed (or the mains failed for any other reason) the laptop would simply keep running on battery power.

Is it possible that it is overheating? Most CPUs these will go into thermal shutdown if they overheat. There are plenty of free utilities such as PC Wizard which will show you what the PC's temperature sensors are picking up:

But then why did it work only after replacing the fuse?:o
I will have a look into it though.

    1. The battery charged no problem after replacing the fuse in plug.
2.I myself did not disconnect it from the mains, it turned itself off... and would not turn on while plugged in. It works on battery without the mains.

And it does not pick up the charger (as it did before with a light) whatsoever.

Hopefully this means a dodgy charger and not the laptop

Check if the DC output from the mains adaptor is correct using a multimeter. 2 minute job. If not then you need a new adaptor, just buy a universal one from any independent computer shop.

While you was fiddling with the fuse the computer cooled down. laptops usally run slower on Battery power as a default setting just to extend how long you can use it before it runs out. usally a dimmer screen, lower voltage to CPU/other chips thus running slower and cooler.
