Finding out my previous insurers

Options
Hey all,

I recently found out that if required i have to provide proof of no claims, (as i've never been sent no claims certificates, you have to request them, i didn't know they existed!) Anyway, i've now been driving for 5 years and not had a claim, effectively meaning i have 5 years no claims. However although i can remember my insurers for the last two years and now have no claims certificates of them i cannot remember who were my insurers for the three years before that.

i obviously have to contact these people to get them to send me my no claims proof so is there any way i can find out who insured me for these years? is there a national database held anywhere?

Sorry for the difficult question hopefully one of you can assist. I'm a poor student and therefore need all the discounts i can get!

Thanks,

Tommy.

You only need the one proof from your last insurer, showing how many years you had accumulated at the end of your policy with them.
  • Hey Quentin,

Thanks for your very quick reply and your help.

The problem is now that I've found moneysavingexpert i sat down and worked out how long i've been driving for, when i had my claims, speeding tickets etc and it seems unfortunately the last couple of years i have not been putting down accurately what my no claims were. For example when i got insurance last year i put down that i only had one years previously when i hadn't claimed. now that i've worked it out, at that time I hadn't claimed for three years. I know it sounds stupid and i don't know how i didn't realise it at the time.

So as you say, i currently have a no claims certificate from endsleigh for two years but this should actually be 5 years. what should i do?

When i next go for insurance should i say i haven't claimed for 5 years even though i don't have the certificates to say so?

    thanks again for your help.

    Tommy.

You will have a problem getting this all verified.

(If you only can show various "old" proofs showing 1 year's NCD, the new insurer will assume you "lost" the NCD and had to start again).

Talk to your current insurer and explain the situation and see if they would be sympathetic to you producing all the old proofs (if you can get them!).

Only state the NCD you can prove when applying next time, as they will want an extra premium (or worse, may cancel your policy) if you subsequently have no written proof of the 5 years NCD.
  • Pants! Thanks again Quentin.

I thought i'd reap the rewards of being good on the roads. its only because i honestly thought that you just said how many years you haven't claimed for, had no idea about certificates.

the problem is i've thrown away all the old insurance certificates (can you tell i'm new to mse?!) and so have none of these "old" proofs.

3 years of no claims wasted it seems unless anyone else can suggest something.

You don't need insurance certs to support NCD proof.

When you get your renewal docs towards the end of your policy year you should find a referernce to the NCD earned by the end of the policy year. (This assumes you don't make a claim in the few weeks between the renewal documents being produced and your year end).

That is where you will find your proof and you should hang on to that document to use should you change insurer and the new one require proof of your NCD.
