I'm with scottish power dual fuel fixed which ends 31 august 09. I've tried various comparison websites and the best bet seems to be eon V3 fix online til dec 2010 which I don't want to fix. I can go to the next one down which is still with eon and says I'll save I think £400 a year. but having read various threads on here I don't think I'm getting a true comparison. I then went onto Uswitch which gave the option to click to Scottish Power's standard rate which is what I'd be put on on sept 1 09 to get a truer comparison. this is saying I'd save about £500 a year but what i can't understand is that when you compare the price per unit for both gas and electricity they're actually higher with eon than scottish power so how can I be saving? thanks for any help and i do know I need to make my own decision. our usage is 42,889 units of gas and 8610 of electricity a year for any kind soul who may have about this usage and any tips and we're in Yorkshire. The discrepancy is due to your current deal ending soon, so the comparison site has based the saving on the criteria shown below.

My capped tariff prices are about to end - should I switch or not?

We’ve noticed that you’re currently on a capped or fixed price energy tariff that’s due to expire in less than 2 months. To give you a more accurate comparison, we’ve used the prices you’ll most likely be transferred onto by your existing supplier when your current tariff expires, rather than your old prices.

We’ve used these prices to compare against the rest of the energy tariffs in the market. Any switch application you make today will take between 4-6 weeks to go live, so you can be confident that you’ll start to get your savings very quickly after you’ve switched.

Unfortunately, if you switch from your current tariff before it expires, you will incur cancellation penalties (listed below). Don't worry though - we can help you avoid these penalties if you want to switch. Make an application today and we can hold your switch until Wednesday, 30th September 2009 when the cancellation fees will expire. You'll be asked whether you want us to do this for you when you complete your application online.

    Cancellation Fees:

ScottishPower - Fixed Price Energy Online: There is a cancellation penalty of £20 for gas and £30 for electricity if you leave this tariff before the contract end date of 30/09/2009, unless the cancellation request is due to a home move.

PS I got the same reults as you suggest using EnergyHelpline for the Yorkshire area, do you live in a mansion BTW? You gas IIR is twice the national average.

no we don't but it's an 1890's house with no double-glazing. It's got 4 bedrooms but not really big but it is detached so obviously 4 outside walls which probably doesn't help. I think it's too high but I'm ecomomical without wanting to sit with a coat on! thanks for your help - what I couldn't understand was they uswitch was saying we would save money even though the price per kilowatt was quite a bit higher than scottish power and this was comparing it to sp's standard rate rather than our current capped rate?

Your house will probably still be standing long after my 1980/s box is a pile of rubble.
Its not immediately obvious what's going on on these sites, especially when there are exit fees and the like.
I noticed the second cheapest EON gave Tesco clubcard points if thats of any interest.

  • My capped rate tariff with EON is ending on 1 October 2009 and I've tried several compaison sites, putting in the same data re gas and electricity usage and only two have come back with the same results. Surely they should all compare like for like? I'm very confused as to what I should do right now and also, to fix or not to fix?

    Welcome to the forum.

Were you putting in your kWh into the comparison websites? They normally come back correct for me with kWh inputted.

The 'fix or not' dilemma has been addressed many times over the past few years and has always been a gamble, and will remain a gamble.

However exit fees are not huge in relation the the size of the average bill, and if you do gamble wrongly - then you lose a little money by switching.
