Buyer states payment sent, but how?

I recently sold an item on ebay that is to be collected only, on MyEbay where it shows whether the item has been paid for there is a 'sand timer' image and when I hover my curser over this symbol it states that the buyer 'sent payment on xx/xx/xxxx'.
I checked my paypal account which is empty and so I have sent the buyer a polite email asking how he has paid and when he would like to collect the item.
I did state cash on collection was preferred however, I know I cannot refuse paypal payments.
So does anyone have any ideas?
I do hope they haven't sent a cheque as I'm on my hols soon so they'll have to wait even longer to collect!!
It seems strange also that they haven't replied back, even though they might not be on their computers everyday!

It is possible that the buyer has clicked on 'mark as payment sent' - you can do this easily without paying through paypal etc, Other than this I am unsure, sorry!0

Thanks for you reply, I hope that is the case and they are not playing silly time wasting games! Had that before and it's quite annoying :-(0
