budgeting loans

Hi was wondering if there was a basis that a loan would not be granted? HAve applied as have had 2 apliance brake down (washing machine, cooker) my 6 year olds bed is falling apart, its her 6th birthday and i cant afford ANYTHIGN (birthday on 1st sept) also i am behind with rent from a letting agent... also my bank i have £314.00 overdrawn also i have applied for enough to white wash the new house i have moved into and enough to decorate just my daughters bedroom and my sons (1yr olds) bedroom...
I have also asked for help buying shoes and school clothes for my daugher..I live on the south east coast (brighton area) I'm 26 been on IS since Feb my daugher is 6 on the 1st sept and my son has JUSt turned one... Should i let my hopes get up that they will say yes...?

Any advice or experience similar to this GREATLY appreciated... I have read loads on the Directgov site but still dont have any incling whether or not it will be likely?

Also realisticly how long does it take to be paid if they say yes? is it a case of them sending you a form to sign, send it off and then they pay you or do they write to you with their decision and then just pay into your account??

You want money for a cooker, washing machine, bed, child's birthday, rent, shoes, school clothes, paint and your overdrawn at the bank.

Rather rude question I know but what exactly do you spend your single parent(x2 kids) benefit on

  • I would prob ask the same questions but when i moved into the new smaller and cheaper house, BOTH my washing maching and cooker were broken (i knew about the cooker before hand) however the cooker point here is electric (my cooker was gas) my daughers bed the divan part under matress as collapsed and therefore the matress sinks into the base...!! and after incurring so many extra costs moving away from Brighton to the outskirts to try and decrease my monthly outgoings i am finding it difficult to get by...!! Im a proud person and find embarrassing to have to ask anyone for anything..!! But like many on here i paid my TAX and NI for many years so help that i am entitled to i dont take as first option i asked my parents first but they are in the process of buying a new house after selling their house and moving from Brighton to herfordshire so they cant help at all....!! I dont find your question rude, i understand why you asked it and have been as honest as i can be hoping i havent left any of my outgoings/incomings out!!

  • there is a set amount of money that you are eligable for with budgeting loans, I'm sorry I don't know what the amount is, but when I was on IS the amount I could borrow was up to £800 I think.
They will look at how much you are allowed to borrow within the guidlelines, then take off anything you already owe and look at any other debts you have to pay to ensure that you can afford to repay the loan.

If you meet the criteria, they will send you a letter, which you have to sign and send back to them. Once they have recieved it, they will release the funds, which then take 3 working days to reach your bank account.

If they cannot lend you all that you have asked for, they will offer to lend you a smaller amount.

    Hope this helps

There are limits to the size of the loan. With a child it is higher but I doubt it will be large enough for all you have listed (maybe £750 odd.)

It should take between one-and-a-half to two-and-a-half weeks between application and receiving payment to your account. (If you take an application from a Job Centre.) It's a budgeting loan, not a community care grant you need.

There are usually plenty of free cookers and washing machines of last year's colour available from freecycle etc (although you'll have to find a friend or man/woman with a van to pick them up.) (But are either of these the landlord's responsibility? £950 sounds a ridiculous amount for an unfurnished house.)

You won't cripple your daughter's back letting her sleep on the mattress on the floor for a few weeks whilst saving up for a new bed. (At least you still have a mattress - the more expensive part. A child's bedstead is cheap.)

Do you have to waste £80 a month paying for transport to school? Can't you walk?

Ive got rid of the base of the bed and she is currently sleeping in with me, the house i live in attracts alot of spiders so NOT fair to let her sleep on the floor..
My current house is 950.00 because its just outside of brighotn...My last house was £1200 a month!! Hence why i have moved, and my house before that was £1075.00 Brighton is very expensive with low wages.. Go figure!! lol so i have moved about 7 miles outside of brighton, therefore my daughters school is in fact a bus journey away luckily its only 2 miles i think but its all up hill so with a baby and her to get ready and school starts at 08:40 bus is my only option...

Thanks for advice on the BL just wanted to know if they are likely to help at all....

The maximum sum you would get with a budgeting loan in your situation is £812.00. This will be reduced for any social fund debt you currently have.

Any debts you have that aren't social fund, declare them as your repayments will be lowered and spread out over a longer period of time to take account of your outgoings.

How long it will take depends on how busy the processing sections are, as a budgeting loan is not considered a priority loan. It can take up to 4 weeks during busy periods. You must have been in reciept of your income support for 26 weeks or longer to meet the qualifying benefit condition.
