Dodgy P87 claim

Someone I work with recently submitted a false claim on a P87 form (at least I think it's false). I have submitted a couple of these claims in the past and I am aware that this form is used to claim back money for the business travel you make in your own vehicle. I know it's abit more complex than that but in my opinion that is the jist of the claim. The person I work with filled in one of these forms but does not even own a vehicle and travelled to and from work with another of my colleagues as a passenger. Now I know in most circumstances, commuting cannot be claimed but we work at a temporary address and it is therefore abit of a loophole. Several of my other colleagues have submitted a P87 form and are basically being asked to provide as much info as they can, but the guy who submitted the completely false claim is getting away with it scott free (he has been sent a cheque for the amaount). Could anyone advise me on this as I am unsure what to do, I have to say it annoys me quite abit that someone can just claim over a thousand pounds that they aren't entitled to and get away with it.
I hope this rant makes some sense, if not let me know and I'll do my best to explain

If it is really bothering you, there is nothing to stop you informing HMRC about this anonymously. Tell them what you have told us, including, obviously the person's name and who he works for.

You can report your colleague via this site -

Your details will not be divulged to your colleague if/when HMRC investigate his claim.

  • The P87 lets you claim back for a lot of other job related expenses, not just travel. Professional memberships etc can be claimed back through it, nights away on business you can claim back on your accommodation and meals etc if your employer doesn't pay for it.

So could it be for something else?
  • sdonaldon, sorry I forgot about the fact that you can claim for various others things apart from travel. I'm almost 100% sure that he has only claimed for "travel", also our company reimburse us in full for any other expenses we incur e.g. hotel stay, meals whilst away, etc.

I'm using the form to claim tax relief on mileage I've been reimbursed under 25p per mile. I have a company car and during the last tax year received 13p, then 11p and now 10p!
