Proposed Redundancy

Hi. I was given proposed redundancy 2 weeks ago, then had a meeting last Friday to find out how I came to be given this. I had scored the lowest in points after line managers gave their scores for each employee then the production manager gave theirs then the average was taken. I scored ok, the end results saying that I came in, did my job then went home but sometimes I had bad days. My scores dipped on my attendance - my brother died very suddenly at Christmas aged 40 and it's taken me a while to come to terms. My title is Production Executive and I have a meeting at 9.30 in the morning to discuss this further, maybe with proposals on how to avoid redundancy etc.

Yesterday, an internal advert was emailed out advertising a position. This position title is TRAINEE Production Executive. The criteria for the job matches my skills and experience. I've spoken to ACAS and they've said for me to ask them 'why is my position being made redundant' and also to appeal as it seems they are getting rid of me for my position to be filled by a cheaper version.

Any help/thoughts/queries would be great.

Thanks

i thought that in order to be made redundant, the position also had to be removed (for at least six months.

(I'm also in line for possible redundancy)
Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?

Not true. I don't know where this myth of six months came from. The business environment changes by the day. A role can be made redundant and then new orders come in the following day, hence the need to rehire.

That is the whole point of the process. Firms don't make people redundant for the sake of it; they make them redundant because the role is no longer needed and to save money.

They have decided a production exec is no longer needed, and that your tasks can be done by a cheaper trainee production executive.

While it looks bad, they are doing nothing wrong legally.

Hey that's crazy. OK they get rid of the production executive. What then happens when the trainee is fully trained, they get shot of them too and get another in..?. There must obviously be a need for a production executive otherwise why would they advertise the same job albeit at a trainee level.. If what they were doing isn't illegal every company would be doing it regardless of the current climate. If i were the OP i would definately seek legal advice.

So what happens if they sack the production executive, appoint a trainee and then as you say the day after appointing him the work situ changes drastically. Can they then sack the trainee and re-appoint an executive..? If so either way it sucks big time.
