Faulty Xbox just out of warranty - sale of goods act covered?RROD

Options
Hi all,

I bought my Xbox 360 from PC World in Feb 2006 using my credit card.
Since then, it has had the "red rings of death" hardware fault 3 times, but is now outside of the Microsoft warranty for this repair and they want £90 to fix it.

Some fellow gamers have stated that the sale of goods act should bail me out here, as it covers up to 5 years from purchase?

Can anyone advise if this is truly the case, or if I will be laughed out of the store as it's 3 years later?

Is it for the store to deal with though, as all they would do is send to microsoft for a repair,

That's what I'm unsure of, as I imagine a lot of people must have tried this when the RROD first started to happen.

Hiya (first post - so go easy)

I had the same problem with my xbox a while back and just went out of "store warrenty".

Check the xbox support website and search for "KB907534" and try doing a local fix. Failing that, continue on and send it directly to Microsoft, its free. You basically fill in a couple of online forms, print out a delivery note, contact UPS, they collect it, take it away, fix it and return it - again, all free. Mine went away with the RROD - and came back with a new DVD drive, motherboard and power interface. Remember, only send the console, not the controller.

PS - took about 7 days to send off and come back.
PPS - The URL you get from UPS might need faffing around with - an extra character in the link

A colleague at work said MS replaced & fixed his and it was 4 years old.

    Hope it helps

[edit] I couldnt include any links because of being a new user - sorry

Thanks bud, but Microsoft have already told me it is outside of the 3 year RROD warranty (it expired in Feb this year) so they want £90 or something to fix it.
    Total nightmare.
Wish I knew how to repair these things!

Long overdue reply here, but just wanted to say I ended up getting a £6 repair kit off ebay and fixed the RROD myself.
    £84 saved right there!!
(and yeah, it's THAT EASY to fix!)

My son's xbox 360 elite didn't have the RROD, and as it was 2 years old it was passed the normal warranty. We were £80 to get it fixed. It was picked up last Tuesday. It was returned today. Except it wasn't the original xbox that was returned, it was a brand new one with a year's warranty. It said in the letter that due to time constraints they have decided to replace it rather than repair it.

I know 2 years isn't that long but it has been played to death. He's well chuffed to get a brand new, and not reconditioned one.
