Removing a fireplace from a "chimneyless" house

I'm in the process of buying my first home and something I want to get rid of immediately is the stone clad surrounded gas fire. There is no chimney stack on this property so I'm wondering how costly it will be if I simply need to have the flue "sealed"? (not sure if this is what is needed!)

Alternatively I may remove the cladding and replace the fire, however the house is only about 40 years old and the fire currently sits on a completely flat wall - ie. no alcoves etc which would normally make the fireplace a feature of the room. Any ideas for a inexpensive more modern feel?

Thanks in advance!
