Programs which are running in the background have a tendency to stop responding when the command is sent for them to be exited, which results in it hanging when you want to shut down.
Do any applications give you the "this program is not responding" window with the "End now" button etc during the shutdown process?
If you can track down the program responsible, you might want to consider uninstalling it
hope this helpsYO!0 -

Most of the conditions you will face whilst shutting down your computer are listed http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php there is also http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314101 though if you can remember the last program you installed, then this is more than likely the problem.
HTHIt could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -
Thee are various entries in the Microsoft knowledgebase related to shutdown problems. Some of the latest updates have addressed some of the issues but not all. For example my 'InCD' program can cause problems on my cmputer (part of the Nero suite). There is something that can be done that forces applications to close instead of Windows trying to shut them down in a controlled manner .. if I can find it I will post it.
IvanI don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0 -
In device manager I've spent hours turning various bits on and off to eliminate them. The only problem I can see is with the realtek AC97 audio driver. There is an update for it and when I do it the update turns the driver off and i have to rollback to the original driver. It may have no bearing on the failed shutdown at all--but its all magic anyway!!0
