Prepaid cash card/visa debit for budgeting

After recently seeing the o2 ad for visa prepaid card i thought it would be a good idea to help me control my spending. Alas as usual with o2 their website mucked up my address and I was only granted a lower limit you can load the card up with, around £1k per annum so is pretty much useless for me now.

Just wondering if there's any other cards or bank accounts on the market which will give me a visa debit/pre paid credit card without any monthly charges or fees? A bonus would also be sms or email balance alerts.

So far haven't found anything similar

Thanks

Ring O2 and ask them to amend your address. I did it and then came up verified = top limit.

  • Thanks for your reply oxenryd.

I phoned them up twice to sort it out (apparently its a known issue with their website which is messing up addresses) however I was told as I had already completed the sign up process that there was nothing they could do. I even asked if it was possible to cancel and reapply but was told I can only apply once a year.

I'm assuming you didn't reach the end of the sign up process before you rang them?
  • Ah seems like it might be 3rd time lucky. Rang up again anyway and they have amended my address and reissued my card. Haven't been told its the verified limit but i'll keep my fingers crossed. cheers

Just incase anyone else is looking at prepaid cards for budgeting I've not been able to find any other than the o2 card which does load on fees somewhere...whether topping up, cash withdrawals etc

    Glad you got it sorted.
My understanding is if they can verify your address, you get the 10k load limit

  • I read an article about the APS Cashplus prepaid card and I decided to sign up with them, they don't do any credit checks and they guarantee 100% approval which was ideal for me as my credit rating isnt the best. The reason I signed up for their card was mainly due to the fact that they have a credit builder add-on where you pay £4.95 every month and they report it to the credit agencies, so if you keep up the payments it will help towards bettering your credit rating. There is a brief read up about the card and what it has to offer here: http://www.financetalks.co.uk/aps-cashplus.html

You can use it like a standard credit card, ie pay for items online and in stores and I'm pretty sure you can use this card on PayPal.
