Redundancy and how to cope? really need advice please

Hi, i work for a commitee run after school club, i am the manager and have very good knowledge of the finances of the club. we make no profit as we are a charity, we actually work at a loss. Looking at the figures at a recent meeting we will be lucky if we survive xmas, our numbers to make a profit is 47 children per week, we actually have 23-30 on a good week, i am absolutly terriffied that i am going to loose my job, i will get no pay off and dont know what to do??????? My partner is on (before tax) £15,500 approx, will we qualify for tax credits? will i get JSA or income support? i have never claimed benefits before so wouldnt know where to start!! luckily we have no children in this equation! any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks xxxx

I'd suggest you first have a look here for some general information about redundancy.

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/RedundancyAndLeavingYourJob/index.htm

You don't really give enough information to be specific about your case - I presume that you are formally employed by the charity - they are paying tax and NI for you ? How long have you been working there ? How many hours a week do you work ?

If you have been employed by them for two years you would be entitled to the statutary minumum redundancy at least - if they can't afford to pay this then the government can step in to pay it instead. Providing you have been paying enough NI in the recent past (I believe that currently it would be in the tax years 2006-7 and 2007-08) and would be looking for another job then you'd be entitled to six months contibutions based JSA.
  • I'm confused. Last week you posted this on another thread:

Maybe you could sell some of your Chloe bags if you run into financial difficulties.
  • The only link I can suggest is

    https://www.entitledto.com

Perhaps in the summer holidays you could identify steps that could bring in additional students into your after school club. Are you affiliated with a specific school and work in partnership with them? Would the school help you produce some leaflets that could be sent to each of the students' parents? Perhaps the school is already planning to send out a letter to the parents about other matters and so your leaflet, advertising your club, can be included, thus not incurring additional postal expense?
If it is for primary school children, perhaps you could have a sign advertising the after school club so that the parents could see it when they collect their children?

Perhaps the school / council will include some information about your club on their websites?

    Good luck anyway...

Why would you get "no pay off"?

Perhaps it's a good time to monitor the local job market "just in case".

Unfortunately, these things happen to all of us. Having a good budget, not wasting money and building up some savings is a good contingency, but you may ultimately be faced with having to get another job.
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
  • I totally sympathise with you, I recently lost my job, I had 2 days notice, and was treated really badly by my previous employer. They did let me leave without working my notice, paid me instead, but they had no regard for the impact this would have!

The first thing to do is get to the job centre, as demeaning as it is, they can give you all the benefits youre entitled too, as far as new jobs, the jobcentre was awful, the best way to find work I fiund was CV posting, joining all the local agencies, and just applying for everything you could possibly do, everyday on the web.

I was out of work for 5 weeks, then straight into somthing, similar wages, much better than my old job! It may be a blessing in disguise! Just stay positive, and cut all unnecessary spending, and you'll be ok.

    You might even benefit!

As the manager and a professional and someone with chloe bags and chanel makeup, isnt it YOU who are responsible for the fact that the organisation is failing?

So you are afraid of being made redundant as a basis of what you, as the manager, didnt achieve?
