Matalan Customer Safety

I was shopping in a Matalan store recently with my young baby (he was 5 weeks) and my mum. We were having a general browse around the shop when I spotted some tops I liked on one of the rails higher up on the wall. I started flicking through them to find my size when the rail and clothes fell down on top of me narrowly missing my baby. I was just standing there in shock cos I didnt know what had happened. Another customer pointed out that it was unsafe.

Two Matalan employees sauntered over and there first words were "what have you done to our display" This was said in a rather unpleasent tone and with lots of dirty looks. They started huffing and puffing about having to clean it up insinuating that I should be doing it. They didn't even ask if i was ok!!!! I was so disgusted I had to walk away!

I later emailed there customer services helpdesk stating the situation. I got an email back ... someone will call ... they didn't ... I emailed again ... someone did call but unforunately they went to voicemail and stated they would call back ... they didnt ... I emailed again ... finally got a call back and the woman stated she would investigate at the store and call me back and 6 that night. No phone call until the next morning where the woman stated she would send out a letter detailing the incident and what action was to be taken. I was happy with this. 7 days on no letter and when I emailed again I was sent a very breif and abrupt letter.

So long story short I'll never be shopping there again, and trust me I've spent a fair bit in there in my time!!!

I guess the escort job you thought about didnt go as planned so matalan have to try front your wages :D

Joking aside , if they said they would call and didnt , dont email anymore , call their head office and make a fuss , usually works. Their rails arent supposed to colllapse so look into it.

But next time everone never walk away , thats what companies want you to do , in construction that would go in an accident asa "Near Miss" regardless if nobody was hurt due to the potential damage.

Stores are quite often when it comes to safety concerns. In a branch of Staples they have a ranges of safes, and one of them bizarrely when the 'Open' button was pushed, the door flung up upwards full force and smashed of the above shelf. The ingenius staff had of course not implemented a code to lock it or took out the batteries, and they were clever enough to shelve it at waist height so many people would lean over it. I told someone in the shop that it was a potential hazard and I got the pally repsonse that they would sort it straight away. When I visited again later it was stilll there so I put it on a high shelf and helped myself to the batteries. I noticed he shelf above was metal - and dented from the force of it!:eek:

Safety concerns don't gain them any sales, customers or revenue and aren't exactly the thing you'll forget about with a £1 off voucher so I guess they aren't bothered. :(

TBH I was more angry because the rail almost hit my 5 week old baby!! Lol I never thought about being an escort, I just looked into it to see if it was legit :j
  • I went shopping in a local supermarket recently where there was a pool of water in the aisle leaking from their chiller cabinets and no sign to say the floor was wet. This is a regular occurence in this particular store so I know to be aware. However, when I reported it to a shop assistant, I just got looked at like I had 27 heads - no action was taken. I asked to see the manager (after 30 minutes of being in the shop and nothing had been done to either warn customers or clean it up) and complained that the member of staff had just shrugged her shoulders and pointed out that someone could slip and sue them. He was just as uninterested.

If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands
