Help! Wi-Fi connection has vanished

Hi

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro, running Windows Vista which has suddenly decided that it can't find any networks. The router (Thomson) is connected to the desktop and is running fine. I've tried switching it off and on again, and checking that the wireless is switched to "on" but this hasn't solved the problem.

This happened all of a sudden and I'm not sure how to sort it out - the router came with minimal instructions and there isn't anything helpful with the laptop either.

Help! Where do I start trying to fix it?
"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee."

Does it still show up as 'enabled' in the Network Connections panel?

  • Depending on what view you have. Should be Start, settings, network connections.

  • I've gone into control panel > networks. It tells me that Windows cannot find any networks. I'm not sure where I go to enable networks - is it the same as making the network visible?

  • I found Device Manager and checked Atheros Wireless Network Adaptor - working fine and Realtek Ethernet NIC - working fine

I've also checked with a cable into the modem and got internet that way, so I'm assuming it is definitely a laptop problem.

Would a system restore help - there were a couple of updates when I restarted the laptop.

  • I've poked around a bit more and it is telling me that a Local Area Cable is not connected (Realtek). What should I do now?
