No sound on PC

Earlier this year I installed a basic sound card on my PC. Only a cheap one as it is just for watching Iplayer stuff, using the small speaker in the monitor. Last week the sound suddenly stopped. I replaced the sound card and lead, but there is still no sound. Has any one got any suggestions as to what to do next.
I can afford anything that I want.

Silly me, I must have placed an object on the mute button on the keyboard. My son spotted it immediately and now I have a sound card that I do not need. You live and learn.I can afford anything that I want.
