Why use Adobe?

I've just got a new job involved in producing information leaflets. I have to pay particular attention to making them consistent, accessible and professional looking (other people do the technical content).

Can someone explain to me (in simple terms ::)!!) what benefit there may be in using Adobe - rather than Word, which they are being produced in at the moment.

The basic leaflet design will be very simple; has to be easily printed using a photocopier; must give me flexibility to reproduce the leaflets in at least 2 different font sizes; will probably transfer onto a web-site for public access in the next year or 2.

I know a few similar organisations to my own use Adobe, but at the moment I can' see any real benefit.

Any comments gratefully received,
Thanks
Shirley

    It can't be easily changed
  • Greater compatibilty than a Word document - the program to read a .pdf file on screen can be easily downloaded for free. MS Word cannot (legally).

I think that the 'inability to change' pointed out above is also very important - especially when publishing online.
  • Because your document will look the same on anyone's PC - plus properly created PDF's can be resized without any (or hardly any) loss of quality in the image.

You can view Word files on a PC with this free Microsoft utility here.
Excel files can also be viewed with another free Microsoft utility here.
Each viewer is around 11Mb in size and is suitable for the 2003 and earlier versions of the files. There are smaller versions of these utilities that work for version 2000 and before.

I still think acrobat is a more widely accessible format. It is quite common for the two to co-exist on many websites.
