Pregnancy and Redundancy

I am pregnant and expect to be made redundant on 30/03/2010.

Baby is due in February. I was going to take 39 weeks maternity leave and then look for another job. Using any redundancy payouts given in November 2010 to help me financially until I find another job.

I now find myself in the position of having no income in April with little chance of another job and any redundancy payouts would disappear before Im able to look for another job. (I took six months to recover after my last pregnancy.)

I would appreciate any help and advice that I can act on before my baby is born.

Had you specific complications that prevented you working for six months after the birth of your previous child, and are you expecting those same complications this time?

hi, I think you would still be entitled to statutory maternity pay which covers 39 weeks. I know it is not a huge amount but at least it is a start which you could top up with some of your redundancy pay. I think this is the case (as long as you have worked for your current employer for over 6 months) but you should maybe check it out with an advice agency if there is one near you or check out the SMP website

Thanks MSW - If I were to get the 39 weeks SMP in with my redundancy settlement in this financial year, would I have to pay tax on it ? This might mean I wont be getting much from the weekly SMP. Or can I get the money in the new financial year ?

Thanks for the link, very helpful !

Hi Paul, I had some post delivery problems from my c-section (C-section I expect again) so cannot rule out complications and post-op problems cropping up again.

    Thanks
