Cleanser - cheap and cheerful

Hi, don't know if this is the correct place to post this but a while ago I won some cleanse and polish by liz earle, along with the muslin cloths.

As anyone knows, this is very expensive stuff - but very nice.

Well, what I do is buy 'Diprobase or Acqueous cream' - slap it on and use the muslin cloth and found that it removes make really well. With it being so cheap, you can just slap it on a couple of times to make sure all make up is removed. And I just use the liz earle cleanse and polish in the morning, and since I have no make up on I only need a little to cleanse my face.

You can buy Diprobase or Acqeous cream from any chemist. It's just an emollient that people with dry/sensititive skin use. Has no harsh ingredients in so should be alright for everyone.

Anyway, hope this helps any bargain hunters out there, and if this is in the wrong place - could someone let me know where it should've been.

Thanks, Mandy

  • This is a great product, its basically the same as all the posh creams without the fragrances. I usually get it from poundland but if they dont have any Wilkos do it for about £1.20. Its also avalible on perscription so if you do have a skin condition some of you could get it free ie. Under 19, on benifits, elderly. I use it all the time and am always being complemented on how soft my skin is!

I add a few essenial oils that I know my skin tolerates to acqueous cream: it seems a bit clinical otherwise :)

Good advice Mandy-j0. Not so good though if you have oily skin imo.

I use aqueous cream as a cleanser - although I use water and flannel with it, rather than a cloth.

I also add salt and some essential oils to it to make a nice face scrub.

After a bit of experimenting, I now use almond oil for cleansing. It removes my make-up beautifully, even my enduring foundation. I use it in the evening and massage it in and wipe off, repeat if necessary then rinse with water. It is lovely and light and my skin feels really well balanced since I stopped using commercial cleanser.

I also do a mini facial with it when I can be bothered! My skin seems to absorb it really easily.

Sainsbury's sell it with the cooking oils. £1.69 for 250ml bottle, lasts for absolutely ages.

Bronnie - sounds gorgeous! I want to try the OCM but the thought of the castor oil puts me off, get the mix wrong and it could be very drying. I just like the idea of it and would like to stop using commercial cleansers, for MSE reasons but also to improve my skin. I have quite a lot of blackheads (OH is too kind and says that he doesn't see them, but I do!) and the OCM is meant to be good for getting rid of them.

Also, what is your 'mini facial' routine if you don't mind sharing?

Its not "very drying" at all tara - the other oils stop it from being so

What will happen if you have too much castor oil for your skin type will be it feels tight after cleansing. All you do is moisturise with a tad more carrier oil for that day and just top up your mix with more carrier oil (ie olive/almond/sunflower)

Its not a lasting effect and you just watch what your face is doing and make adjustments accordingly. Im forever changing my mix and usage depending on time of month, weather conditions etc.

Any oils are good for cleansing, the Romans and Egyptians were using them century's ago and spa use them today. Almond oil is great for shifting make up - esp water proof mascara, Olive oil is just as effective and there are that go as far as saying olive oil is a great defender against skin cancers

I also use almond oil as a nail conditioner and I use Vit E oil as a deep moisturiser in the winter when I have the heater on in the car.

using more natural and home made mixes you do tend to get to know your skin better and know what it needs and when it needs it

Sounds lovely, thanks for taking the time to type all that, suki1964!

So is the castor oil mix more effective than just (say) almond oil alone, and why?
