Does anyone know when you are entitled to apply for a 3bed house instead of 2bed? We are in a 2bed at the mo we have 1 child - a 3 month old. Our family are 4 hours away and when they want to stay we struggle with space as have no spare room. Do you have to have two children? or can you apply for a 3bed anyway? Thanks x

Depends on the surplus of MQ's available. It used to be you could apply but should there then be a shortage for those entitled, technically you could be made to move back to your entitlement level. I think you will find that most service personnel are in a similar position of their family living miles and miles away and accomodating them when they come to stay is difficult.0

DE might have changed the rules but it is married no children - 1 bed, 1 child 2 bed etc.
As slummymummy says it depends on the housing stock at the Unit or allocation area. If there is a surplus, and I doubt there is of 3 bed as they tend to be the most sought after, then you can apply to move in, and they used to be able to turf you out if they needed it back.0 -
DE will state that your entitlement is only 2 beds, and this may not change of you had two kids depending onhtier ages!! Best bet is to ask them what the chances are and go from there. Whilst the theory is that you may be moved if someone more deserving needs a larger house, I have never heard of anybody being subjected to it.Credit Card Debt

Only if you are a grunt or fishead. It is an RAF Condition of Service that you are allocated the quarter you are entitled to. With 2 children this entitles you to a type C, 3 bed. If no type C available, you get a nice civvy rental.{Signature removed by Forum Team}0 -
Technically you are not entitled to a 3 bed but its certainly worth asking. We moved from a 2 to 3 bed when i was pregnant with our first baby. If there is surplus they may well let you have one.
I think as far as kids go they are only entitled to their own bedroom once they are over 10 years old.
Do you not have a welfare house on camp you can use for your family to stay in?0 -

Most (RAF) Units have these. There have been 2 or 3 on the last units I have been on - there is a priority booking system so you could get bumped off but not usual. They get booked up at peak periods xmas etc - but outside of that I never had a problem getting people in when I needed to.
Some of the charities associated with the forces have places you can rent too, check with the Hive they normally know all these places in striking distance if you cant stay on camp. Or buy a sofa bed !!0 -
As people have said, just ask DE. We have 2 children but are in a brand new 4 bed hiring. If you don't ask you don't get!!Murphy's No More Pies Club Member No. 680

As long as you are prepared to pay the extra rent, I think generally they are happy to allocate above entitlement if there is surplus. However, if you don't ask you don't get!!
Before we had Child no 2, we always used to put a letter in with the SFA application forms stating we wanted a 3 bed and was aware of the extra charge, etc. We always got a 3 bed)

I have a 3 bed and there is only my Husband and I, I think it depends on what is available in your area.0

Whereabouts are you? There's a few places dotted about that have Short-term family accommodation (STFA), pay around £30 a night to rent a furnished house or flat, we usually rent a three-bed house for weekends in Plymouth and have rented houses for family members for them to be able to visit us.
As far as I know, there's SFTA's in Gosport, Exeter, Plymouth, Corsham in Wiltshire and Helensburgh.0
