Guitar Hero World Tour - guitar won't connect

Hi
Was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on this before I throw the whole band out of the window....
Recently got World Tour for the PS3 (we already had 1 guitar that works) so set up the drums and the microphone and had the three instruments working fine. At the weekend we had enough people round to use the 4 instruments together (old guitar, new guitar, microphone, drums), but we can't get the new guitar to work.
The lights on the USB dongle and the guitar both light up and flash as expected, but the guitar won't connect to the console. I have tried every combination of pushing the connect buttons, holding the buttons down etc., and I have also tried connecting the guitar by itself, and also with all the other instruments connected.
Any other ideas on what I can do?
The set was a gift, but I do know it was bought from HMV online. however I don't know if the receipt still exists (it was bought approx 2 months ago). We still have the original packaging, but the drums and microphone have been used a good few times (as we set them up before we realised the guitar didn't work). Any help gratefully recieved!
