Can anyone recommend a suitable printer for our computer?
Nothing too fancy - required for the odd print and kids homework.
We have heard that you have to be careful as to what you buy as the ink cartridges can be very expensive!
Anyone know of any bargains!!!???
Help and advice very gratefully recieved - as dont really have a clue what we are after!!

Epson printers are great, cheap, reliable, the print quality is pretty good and the compatible cartridges are cheap!
See here for the C48. It's only £33.98 and if you use the 99p shipping code "maytwo" then you get the printer for under £35 delivered.
Another bargain from SVP :-)0 -
Hello jobits
I'll move your thread over to the 'Techie Stuff' board, where it should get more views and responses.
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. Heard many good reviews on Samsung low end laser printers .. Check for Samsung-ML 1610-Mono Laser Printer .. should be somewhere around £50 from your local PCWorld, Currys, Dixons or Argos (when they're on sale) .. or you could get it for £49.99 + £5.89 (P+P) from Amazon at the moment.
Update: Staples has it at £49.99 instore at the moment (you'll get a £5 voucher when you spent > £30).0 -
Thanks to all for your help!! But please can someone explain the difference between an inkjet and a laser printer! Do they both use the same type of ink cartridges or is one more expensive than the other!?0

inkjets have smaller cartridges that cost an arm and a leg, and don't last long. Laser cartridges are more expensive initially (esp colour), but last much longer.
inkjets squirt a die onto the paper, lasers fire a laser at a drum to create an electrostatic charge (of the paper image), the toner is attracted to this charge, and then this is bound to the paper with a heated drum (the fuser).
If you don't need colour, a cheap laser will last a long time.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
The nozzles in an inject will dry up when it hasn't been used for a while, whereas the ink in the laser printer won't do this this because the ink is in powder form.
Trying not to be over cautious, if you're worried about health, I'm not sure about inkjet printers but laser printers emits small amounts of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) which is bad for human health, similar to paints emitting VOCs. If you do get a laser printer make sure you use it in a ventilated room (maybe open a window for the VOCs to escape to??). I can't remember the tv programme where I got this info from. I think one episode was something to do with an office and how people were unhappy (mainly to do with the surroundings of the office e.g. un-natural light, bad ventilation to name a few) and once they made changes to it people were more happy. :think:0
