Crazy Clearance credit account question

in Credit cards
I think this is the right section to post this in.
I have a query which has been bugging me for sometime.
I had ordered items from https://www.crazyclearance.co.uk but I always paid for everything in full using a credit card. I never applied for a credit account.
I checked my credit file many moons later and saw that Crazy Clearance had run a credit check on me and given me credit.
Whenever I ordered from Crazy Clearance I used to see my credit limit but I figured that was just a potential amount of credit I could have if I applied for an account.
Are they allowed to do this? I'm not complaining as I now use the account as I find it handy that it covers the whole Home Shopping Direct network and they seem to enjoy putting my credit limit up every month or so, but I'm still curious if this is normal procedure.
Thanks.

Credit checks can only be made with your permission.
Permission to search credit files is normally sought during the application process, so it pays to read application forms carefully, including all the small print, to see what you are agreeing to.People who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.0 -

I'm going back to read the t&c because I know I didn't apply for a credit account when paying for my items. I registered the usual, name, address, tel no, cc. Sneaky so and so's.0 -
When you open an account with JD Williams they automatically apply for a credit account at the same time0

Just went to register for a new account and there's two options.
Pay now by Credit or Debit Card OR Apply for a Personal Credit Account.
Personal accounts are subject to status andTerms and Conditions apply.
I chose the first option so why would the t&c pertain to me as I wasn't applying for a personal credit account?

Does sound like they've opened an account in your name when you didn't ask them to.
One search won't make much of a difference from a credit rating point of view, but I'd be tempted to write to them, asking them to explain why they have made an unauthorised search of your credit report and opened a credit account without your permission. If they've done something they shouldn't have, then worth pushing them for a credit voucher or something you can get some benefit out of"A child of five could understand this. Sounds tempting but seeing as I now use the account I'm not sure if I'd get anywhere with that, mind you I always pay the balance off every month. Hmmm...0 -

Littlewoods did *exactly* the same to me. I made a single purchase by debit card and without me asking for it or even knowing, they set up an account.
2 years later when I had moved out of my old house, someone used the account (they had continued sending junk mail to my address even though I asked multiple times for them to stop) to order a 3-piece suite, didn't pay and I ended up with a default without knowing. Took me a good couple of month of stress after I discovered the default to get it removed, then a year after that they sold the debt again (even though the first time they had admitted it was not mine) and I got a default *again*. This one was easier to get removed and involved me being extreemly cross with the useless ignorant numpties.
My advice - if you don't need the account, cancel it straight away now you know you have one !0
