Knocking in pipes when hot tap turned on....

Everytime I turn on the hot tap upstairs or down, shower or even the washer it sounds like an engine warming up, not really a knocking sound , but gets louder.
If I turn on the cold tap (bath) and run it for a while it stops, usually though it does now take longer than when it first started!
Can I sort this myself? If so how? or is it a plumber job?

This seemed to start after a plumber had fixed a leaky overflow up in the loft. I wasn't able to bring him back to sort it.......no response to calls.

Any help/advice appreciated, its driving me nuts not to mention breathless legging it upstairs each time:rotfl:

perhaps you have a poltergeist or mouse

  • Mouse removed! it did enough damage for such a small critter, but poltergeist? could be why things disappear never to be seen again and pictures jump of the wall ;)

It sounds like water hammer to me. Have a look here to check for some solutions to resolve it:

If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Thank you for that, it does seem to fit the noise and did happen after work had been done to the tank in the loft. I'll print the relevant bits so that we can try to sort it out and at least now i know the name for the noise :D
