Question about laptop screens

I just received a Dell 630m today and was wondering if there was any way to improve the image quality. The whites seem to be more blueish than white, as if the gamma levels are too high or something. I've taken a picture with my camera and although it doesn't show the issue anywhere near as obvious as it is in reality, you can get the idea.
Comparing it to my desktop lcd screen, you can see it doesn't show whites very well and the colours in general are somewhat washed out. I've turned the brightness all the way up when running it from the wall, and it isn't that. Is this just how laptop screens tend to be? This is my first so I'm not very familiar with them.

It isnt somthing that you usually get on a screen a tft screen is a tft screen with the exception of the sony xblack. check the display settings ee if there is a gamma adjustment maybe the temperature settings are set to cold, if they were warm they would be slightly red somewhere in the middle should be correct.0

thanks, I've had a look around at the settings but it seems like brightness is the only one.0

Laptops usually have a distinct difference in brightness (but not colour balance) between mains and battery, but other than that should be similar to any LCD screen. Is there no Gamma correction in Control Panel, Display, Settings, Advanced?
ps I can't get anything similar to your pictures by lowering the Gamma - other colours go a bit funny, but whites stay white. May be something more fundamental like a dodgy connection.0 -
I have a couple of Dell laptops and neither exhibit the sort of thing you are talking about. Try contacting their technical services department and say you are not happy and think there is a fault .. do you have the onsite warranty .. if so they will send someone out to check it
IvanI don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0 -
Brodel, this is the third forum I have seen you make exactly the same post. Is your problem solved yet?0

thanks guys, no the problem isn't solved apart from the idea that I may have a Samsung screen which is of lesser quality than the Quanta screens used in some other 630m's.
I don't have the onsite warranty but I did only recieve the laptop two days ago, would I still have to pay a return shipping fee for them to look at it after purchasing it so recently.
I've looked at the settings but there really doesn't seem to be more to chose from other than brightness which seems suprising to me.0 -
Why not phone Dell up and have them replace the unit? If you do it under the Distance Selling Regulations, they will charge you £50, but if you tell them perhaps that your screen keeps blanking\cutting out leaving you with nothing but a black screen, they will offer to send you a replacement. This will be a new model, directly off their production run. If you leave it more than 7 days, you are going to have to accept a refurbishment so act quick! If the replacement has the same issues as this one, then you know the problem is inherent in this model and you can decide what you want to do. Alternatively, just ask for a refund and buy another of the same model in a weeks time. Also, have you tried asking in the forum? As the people that frequent it see more of these Dell computers than your average user.
HTHIt could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -
What happens if you display the output to the external screen at the same time (i.e. plug the laptop into the external screen, and switch on simultaneous display Fn+F8). Are you using Fn+up arrow to increase brighness to max. have you set any power saving settings to work on full power?
Does it dim when you pull the power out and run off battery?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Can't suggest anything for the colours, but do you have Microsoft ClearType PowerToy?
Download it for laptops and flat-screen TFT monitors. See here.
It makes the text way way clearer and it seems bizarre that it's not installed in Windows by default.0
