  • Well tell us what you have looked and a feature or two that would be desirable.
Can the budget be increased a bit more as well.
  • It depends on whether he will be mostly using it for music or mostly for videos. Does it have to be an ipod? If not you will get more for your money.

No it dosn't have to be an ipod, he will probably use it mostly for music and podcasts, with the odd video when we are away (i would like to be able to access the internet, but realise this would probably put the price up)

    thanks

  • Apple iTouch then for wireless internet access, also plays music, podcasts and the odd video. I use it everday on the train/tube. Ohh , lucky me my SO just brought me one for my birthday too.

    (Other brands are available)

In that case it will have to be the ipod touch...

Cheapest place for the 8GB version appears to be amazon:

Why limit yourself to MP4 files when you can Cowon multimedia players which can play various other formats of video files such as AVI.

I have used the ipod - small screen and pain having to convert everything to MP4 files first.

PSP - bigger screen but limited to MP4 unless you do some hacking (not great), has wireless.

Cowon A2 multimedia player (superceded by newer models), plays various formats of video and music and has radio, document management, picture storage - 20gig version I have.

You don't have to convert things to AVI first?

Is it a magic format or something? I know you can buy movies, TV shows etc, as mp4 files, but I didn't know you could purchase them as AVI.

Jackie, I advise against buying an iPod touch right now; there'll be a new one out in a few weeks with more features, and it's likely to drop in price too. If you don't want any of the features on the new model, you'll be able to pick the current one up for even cheaper.
