confession time and advice

Hi

I've been an observer of this site for some time now and really need some advice.

I'm not proud of what i'm about to say and am fully aware that i deserve everything that is coming to me......but could really do with some advice none the less.

I recently got fired for theft at work, I had fraudulently been conducting refunds at my work place into my bank account. There is no good reason behind this, in hindsight at least my reasons were stupid. I got myself into debt with several payday loans and was loosing all my wages every month, i used the money i stole to subsidise me on a monthly basis. In total I stole aroundabout £5000. I was caught, not unsuprisingly, and after denying it I eventually owned up and accepted the consequences. I was obviously dismissed and told that the police would not be informed if I paid back everything I stole.

In my "confession" I was very clear in wanting to do this, I do want to put this behind me and I dont feel i can do this without paying it back. The deadline is the 31st August, and I am no closer to finding the money. The company have been in touch and reminded me that if I do not pay back the money by this date they will be calling the police.

More recently I have found another job and have since been accepted for a high profile job (the application went through before the above) and a police record will destroy this. I don't know what to do. I have no-one to turn to and although i haven't applied for loans, i know no-one will touch me due to previous debt problems which I am trying to overcome.

Any advice anyone can offer would be appreciated, I have no-one to blame but myself but I also have no-one to turn to.

Thankyou for taking the time to read this.

I'm not going to shout and ball at you, you realise how badly you have behaved
and are willing to take the consequences.

Is it possible you could explain all that you have said in your post, and ask the ex company if you could set up a payment plan for as much as you can possibly afford every month from the salary of your new job. If you cant get a loan i think its the only way out unless you have family who can help you out.

Dont mean to be rude but does the new job involve finance and are you opening yourelf up to temptation.

You are one very very lucky person

  • You need to try and come to some arrangement with your old employer and try and negotiate. Although I doubt how lienient they would be considering the circumstances. Are you able to get a loan to repay the money, preferably at a low interest rate? Although I know this board is very anti taking out more debt (understandably) in this circumstance, more unsecured debt is going to be better than court fines, a police record and the possibility of going to prison.

Personally I think you should seek legal advice asap, you may be able to get a 1/2 hr free session of advice or be eligible for legal aid. Give CLS (community legal services) a call on 0845 345 4 345

As for your new employer, have they not sought a reference from your old employer seeing as they're most recent or have you just not given them details? I think you should be open with your new employer as if you start work there and it comes out further down the line you could end up in a whole heap of mess.

Everyone has their reasons for what they do, and if desperate enough people will do almost anything. However I think it'd admirable that you've been honest and confessed in order to seek help. I wish you the best of luck and hope you manage to sort something out.

    Thanks for the quick response.

No, no finance, even if i had the oppurtunity I would never repeat the actions, the hell i put myself through the past few months is not worth all the money in the world to repeat.

I think that maybe my only option, I don't think they'll accept it though. I don't see that I have anything else I can do.

Yes, you are extremly lucky to be offered such a 'get out of jail free' card if you repay, you really need to get the £5000 pretty damn fast

    Have you tried family/friends?
**seriously any embarrasment/family telling off will be a very small price to pay in the long term**

Do you own anything of value you can sell?

Sorry to put it bluntly but if you get a criminal record you'll probably find it ny on impossable to get anything like a decent job in the near-mid future and will probably find yourself iin an absolutely horrendous position.

you say you are "I am no closer to finding the money", what have you tried/not tried so far? not trying to be abusive but something really needs to motivate you to sort this pretty fast for your own good!
  • I think you really need legal advice, and also some proper advice about the debt. For the debt get in touch with the CAB, Paypal, or CCCS.

Agree with all the above, plus I'd contact your former employer and make a payment offer by instalments, as high as you can reasonably afford to maintain, pointing out that if you lose the new job their chance of getting the money back any time soon will be virtually nil. You need to stress your commitment to repaying it, but they have to realise that you can't afford 5 grand straight off, and if you get a police record you'll lose the only means you have of repaying them at all.

You may have to grovel, but you have to do what you can to avoid prosecution: that's the last thing you need. Get some advice asap.

My new employer is a small independant company and they haven't asked for references, lucky doesn't really cover it. I'm due to start a job which is a career path for me in September and references etc have all been obtained.

My family aren't in a position to lend me the money if I thought they were I would have no shame in sitting down and talking to them despite the embarassment (which I sorely deserve), like you say Jasx, it is much better then the alternative.

I have looked for loans, my credit is poor though, I have spoken to my bank who despite having lent to me previously and me having cleared the loan, won't lend to me. I assumed if they won't then no-one will. I don't want to get into the trap of brokers and thats all the internet seems to offer - I don't know of any other lenders.

I am motivated and then I'm not. I don't feel like I have any options and so I almost feel resigned that I'm going to be arrested and everything will be screwed up.

Maybe your family are not in a position to lend you £5k but do they trust you enough to get a loan out for you, and you repay them.

I really do hope things turn out for you. You have obviously learned a lesson.
    Good luck
