its a pretty common scam for garages to tell women their brakes are dangerous

id suggest you get a 2nd opinion

i second this point. take it to another independant garage and have them check it.

the garage that sold it may not be the bed sellers you are making them out to be, it's possible the second garage who are saying they have found the faults may be dodgy.

is it possible for a man to drive it to a garage?

A Cambelt is nothing to do with an MOT. How did they know it needed changing? Do they know when it was changed last?

  • My friend bought a car that was just MOT'd the day before she picked it up and that turned out to be far below MOT standard. They complained to the place that did the MOT and threatened to report them to VOSA. The MOT garage took the car and fixed all the faults at their own cost in order to avoid the attention of VOSA.

All garages try to increase their profit on everyone that comes through the door. When I take my car to a garage I've always diagnosed the problem first myself and tell them what I want done. OK this puts the liability on to me if the diagnosis is wrong, but I'm confident that I'm right and prepared to pay if I'm wrong.

For MOTs, I'll go round the car first and see what I think it will fail on. There are some basic pre-MOT check guides you can find on t'internet which are simple enough for most people.
Really an hour of my own time checking various things is worth it for the hassle it can save. For example, if a bulb is out then popping into the local factors on the way and changing the bulb myself would save paying the garage twice as much for the same bulb.

Agreed as unless they had a look at the cambelt or had the actual service records they wouldn't know this.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

i was always under the impression you couldn't 'check' if the cambelt needed replacing, but it was to be replaced in accordance with the manufactures guide lines, think its something within the region of 40 - 60k or every 4 years with most, also its worth checking that some cars need the water pump replacing at the same time, i know this seems to be the case on the Astra MK4 for example

Ive always replaced the cambelt on every used car ive bought, even if Ive been told its been done.

Was there an advisory from the MOT regarding the brakes?
  • Unless it was in visably poor condition, but you'd have to take the covers off to see it.
Was one of the problems a noisy belt?

Wouldn't be a surprise if the next we hear is that its a car with a timing chain and not a belt
  • im probably not looking properly, but has the OP mentioned what car is it??
