Non functioning microphone

Hi
I'd appreciate some advice from any tech savvy moneysavers.
I have a dell 420 xps desktop. just out of warranty, running vista and have downloaded the skype software for the calls
My problem is the mic on the headseet (logitec bought today) does not operate
I'm completely clueless as to why
Can anyone advise please?

not being condescending - but do check that you have connected the 'pink' microphone jack to the 'pink' port at the back of the XPS and that you have also checked any volume control/switches on the headset are setup appropriately.

I would also imagine that you have the microphone muted by default in windows.

I am being incredibly lazy here - but here is a link to a pdf which instructs you to unmute the mic :) :

    http://www.inland-products.com/instructions/Unmute_MIC_XP_2K.pdf

Once you can confirm that it works - i would try the audio ports at the front of the case to ensure that they are working OK.

    good choice of system :)

Have you checked that it isn't muted in the volume control panel? Often the Mic device is muted by default.

IIRC, you need to select the Recording devices, as if it's like the volume control in XP, it only shows Playback devices when you first open it.
  • Thanks cmatt and fwor but i'm not much wiser. liked the pdf but it's for XP i run vista
and all i can find in the sound dialog box relates to speakers, digital output devices both (SPDIF) AND hdmi . Probably do have the mic muted but still don't know how to unmute
