Please don't shout at me just need to know if my next door neighbours have any rights here.

Bought a PS3 around 18 months ago. Everything fine until the other day when their son was playing it. Took a PS3 game out and tried to play the PS2 game nothing happened its is basically not reading the disc. Doesn't play PS3 or PS2 games now.

It hasn't been dropped, liquid spilt over it,nothing untoward to happened to it.

I have had a look online and have come across similar issues with the PS3 but they all seem to be within warranty, alas this isnt within the stated 12 month warranty.

I have told them not to hold their breath and will try and fix it for them but do they have anything that they can do.

Oh and the shop they bought it isn't there anymore so it will have to be direct to Sony.

Sony want £150 to send out a reconditioned PS3 which makes me think that they know something is wrong, and have had the same problem arise.

Any suggestions welcome even if it is to tell me to tell them to buy another one!!!!!!!!!

I all have learnt is from others on many sites.

Hmmm is the model of PS3 they have backwards compatable? Could be a dodgy PS2 disk.

Tried lots of discs. It played both PS2 and PS3 games.

Basically as shop doesn't exist can I get Sony to fix it for free.

  • im having exact same problem, had a ps3 in november 07 and it broke by feb 08. sony replaced it for free and the same thing happened the other day, 18 months later so is out of warranty. sony want £128 to replace it with a console of the same age but with just 3 months warranty. people on here and consumer direct have advised me to go to the shop i bought it from and quote the sales of goods act 1979 which stated that a product should last what most people would deem a reasonable amount of time. consumer diresct say this is LAW. however if the shop you got it from has gone this doesnt help unless it was a chain or you could find customer services for the company?
    hope this helps
