There is a big difference between a sole trader who is home based and one who is out and about most of the time. A researcher who is online for hours is justified in claiming a proportion of their electricity, broadband and other running costs. They are using more because they work at home.

HMRC specifically mentions an example where a builder spends just an hour or so at the kitchen table each month doing the books. Someone like this should not be claiming much for running costs because they are on site most of the time.

If you can come up with a realistic estimate of home-related costs that are a direct result of this business, you could try including them in the expenses but be prepared to justify them. Have you got a separate office and is it often used for this business?
