The interchange of another filter makes no difference,I have tried another handset and that only works when directly plugged to the socket. Broadband works with the filter with the phone plugged in or not plugged as it makes no difference. For pulse read tone just my ignorance!,it seemed a good word at the time to describe the phone on noise. It has always been on tone. The phone works Ok on another socket in the house. It just seems to me that as it works with the socket by itself and not with the filter that it lacks power, I took off all other extensions but that did not make any difference. I have to say I give up!

I'm baffled. One last thing, how many sockets do you have in total, most home circuits will only support a REN of 4, which is broadly equivalent to 4 sockets?

4 sockets!!! As I said i took them all off the system but it did not make any difference . In the next few days I am going to take computer, phone, hub etc
to a different socket and set it up and see what happens. If you like to come back to me on say sunday I will tell you the result. I would add that this whole disaster started when I tried to put an BT BROADBAND ACCELERATOR in my system which proved to close a lot of socket phones down and putting the system back together again I have this problem. Before this everything worked perfectly, broadband and phone in the same socket and same filter. If you read the beginning of pulse you will see i had problems with the wiring but this does not seem to connect up as the phone works without the filter perfectly.
At least it works so I must have connected the wires correctly.

All the BB accelerator (the i-plate) does is to isolate the bell wire connection on the master socket from producing possible interference on the extension sockets, which can corrupt the broadband signal.
The bell wire is not required on modern phones, eg DECT cordless phones. But if you have an older style handset which requires an independent power supply to the bell, then fitting an i-plate will prevent that phone from ringing.
4 sockets is on the limit. The typical maximum REN is 4, and most devices have an REN of 1, some are higher. Have a look at all your active devices and total the REN on them, it should be marked on the baseplate somewhere.
I'm already assuming that you have ADSL filters on all the active sockets, including burglar alarms, Sky boxes etc.

Thanks. I have all you mention my main point is that it all worked Ok until I tried to put in the BROADBAND ACCELERATOR and disturbed some wires but on putting them back I am OK without the filter but with it FAILURE for the phone.
I will report after moving computer etc.

Sorry but you are confusing the issue by posting incorrect information. The bell wire (terminal 3) is not required on any ADSL enabled line.

The OP's problems are still likely to be incorrect wiring e.g. blue/white mixed up with white/blue etc. Pictures would help.

Solved!! It worked OK on another socket so I undid the socket to the computer and I find that when BT put in the extension they had plugged a blue wire into 4 not 5. When i upset the wires in the master box I had put the extension blue wires into 2 and 5 so they were not connecting up correctly, I imagine 4 had been used in the other box so they met up. Anyway many thanks everybody I certainly know more about my telephone than I did 4 days ago. Now I have to decide if I want to try and put in the BROADBAND ACCELERATOR again, I think I will leave it a few weeks!!

Glad yu have got it sorted, I would give it a go, fitting the i-plate does not involve removing any wires, you just insert the plate over the existing socket and refit the faceplate.
Sounds like you would be better at it than BT anyway...

Good to hear that you are now sorted.

The iPlate/BT accelerator will do absolutely nothing if you only have the line pair connected to 2 & 5 at the master, so don't waste your time!

The other wires are redundant, so there is no point them being connected.
