M$ word; cross referencing equations problem

Hi, i'm in the middle of writing my dissertation and am having no end of trouble when cross referencing equations in micrsoft word.

After writing an equation (using MS equation 3) and placing the equation caption I can't get word to only enter the equation number when cross-referencing. Instead it puts the equation number and whole equation itself into the text. Very annoying  . I have been just deleting the inserted equation but it's becoming more of a chore (it re-inserts them after updating tables) and i'm having bits sent off to be read and have changes tracked..

Any ideas? I read somewhere that i can use bookmarks but it seemed a really longwinded method to get around it.

Many thanks

EDIT: I'm using word 2003
