Faulty T-Shirt, no receipt

Options
My teenage daughter brought a (cheap) t-shirt from a shop in town. She wasn't given a receipt. I washed it according to instructions and its shrunk.

She went back in and they told her they couldn't refund as it had been washed.

What are her rights without a receipt?

I think they may just be fobbing her off as she is a youngster but I want to have all the facts before I take it back.

Thanks

You have no rights at all with no proof of purchase.
If she paid by card/cheque and you had a bank statement that would do but
i presume that she paid by cash so youre banjaxed I'm afraid.
You could try going in yourself but if it was a cheap one is it worth all the hassle for a few pounds. Give it to a charity shop if it still looks okay.

wrong you do not need a receipt I suggest you check. You only need proof you purchased this can be cheque statement, bank statement if paid by visa, credit card statement even a witness. http://www.compactlaw.co.uk/free_legal_information/consumer_law/consumq8.html

Huh? That is basically what the guy above you (McKneff) said. What part of what he, or anyone else on this thread, has said is wrong?

You don't need a receipt, but you do need something to say you purchased it from there. If it was cash, that's going to be difficult.

Anyway, if it was cheap, then there's not a lot of point in putting too much effort into it
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

If you want to take it back then do so and explain that they did not give a receipt. If they refuse to replace the t-shirt then tell them you will report them to HMRC for possible tax evasion. One of the main reasons that a lot of small shops (especially market stalls, etc) do not give receipts is so that they can avoid tax.

HMRC do take reports of this sort of behaviour very seriously (a couple of my in-laws work for HMRC)

Haha for a t-shirt? Get real. And the OP didnt say it was a small shop or market stall.

Correct, but a major retailler would have given a receipt.
