Avira guard turned off - help!!!

After some kind of weird 'page sticking' problem on OpenOffice, I've found that my Avira Guard won't switch on when my system boots.. I get a message on the status screen saying 'service stopped'.
According to the help page, I have the option to turn it on via the 'start' link but this is nowhere to be seen. Can anyone help me find it, please??
Should I uninstall and then re-install Avira?

Install and run 'Malwarebytes', it looks like you have a trojan designed to turn-off anti-virus protection. I had a customer with this problem, and it is easy to fix.
Also, make sure to run Malwarebytes regularly to keep your system clean.Never Knowingly Understood.
