How can I tell if I am affected ?
Is there any way to tell or search?

Use your judgement, and above all, be honest with yourself.

I walk with the world & the world walks with me!
I don't make bad choices!!! Other people just fail to see my GENIUS !!!!

For a start, run Spybot s&d, Ad-aware and have spware blaster installed. Then go to start, control panel, internet options, select properties and check that the telephone number it is dialing matches your isp's number.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

Just found this on a news page:SpywareBlaster Update
01-11-03 SpywareBlaster update. Protection has been added for the following items:
SearchBarCash (8 items), PowerSearch Toolbar, YellowPages Adware, ClientMan variant, Searchit toolbar, System61 Hijacker, Adult Content Related, CnsMin Variant, CoolWebSearch variant, SponsorAdulto dialer, ZonaDialer, DialerData, Push Toolbar, Supaseek Toolbar.
Remember, SpywareBlaster does not remove spware from your computer. It protects you from having it installed. If you need to scan and remove spyware, get Spybot Search & Destroy or AdAware.
I'd say that it's a Dialer. Use Spybot or Adaware to get rid of it.
Then check your phone number that you connect to your ISP with corresponds with your normal one (if unsure check your phone bill or contact your ISP)Alex Jones0 -
If you don't need to make International Phone calls from your phone line- instruct your phone provider to bar International phone calls. Can also do the same for 090 no's in the UK.
If you find on your bill that your modem has dialed a 090 no in the UK complain to ICSTIS, phone company should then be able to freeze that part of the bill until resolved. All premium rate operators have to abide by ICSTIS Code of Practice.
Easier to prevent than cure- if the modem has already dialled abroad, not much ICSTIS can do.
Dialler fraud caused by spyware- so get a decent anti-spyware program running, e.g. Giant. Or try the new Microsoft thing as Giant has now been bought out by them. https://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx:idea:I got an idea, an idea so smart my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about:idea:0 -
The "new Microsoft thing" is beta software, which means it has NOT been fully tested and placed on 'general release'. basically, you use it at your own risk. Be aware.0

Install BT modem protection software available for download here
It's only available to Northern Ireland customers.
If your not in NI use phone no. 02899999999 and post code BT1 1ZZ
It will only work on:-
Windows 2000 professional SP4
Windows XP Professional SP2
Windows XP Home SP2
Terms and Conditions are at https://www.btni.co.uk/prdialler/terms.htm and FAQ at https://www.btni.co.uk/prdialler/faq.html
I've not tried the software as I'm on broadband but I would like feedback from people who have as I know people who would like to use it if it doesn't cause any problems.0
