Hi sorry if this sounds like a dumb question but i always get confused about this. Are Halifax and Natwest one and the same? i mean under the Government covering out first £50k in one institution are they classed as the same? Thanks

Apart from the government owning a large proportion of their shares, they have no other connection at all.
Halifax is a trading name for the Bank of Scotland plc, which is part of the HBOS plc group. This, in turn, is owned by Lloyds Banking Group plc.
Natwest (National Westminster Bank plc) is part of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group.
They are completely separate institutions.0
