The op stated it was an unpaid placement

Ah I see, sorry. Must have missed that. Is it possible to change to a paid placement if a paid one becomes available?
  • I got myself a paid placement, my fees were still some £600 (I really have no sweet clue what the hell for, the uni did !!!! all for me except visit 2 times in the year. it was a £2 bus ride from the uni)

Anyway, I got my tuition fee loan to cover that, but I turned down the maintenance option which had been available from my LEA (they all differ I guess).

My university has 4 paid placements available for every student looking so I think it has very little to do with the 'financial climate' and more to do with the university's placement department. Many people see us students as cheap labour, I was on £12K for my placement, when you would have to have paid a graduate somewhere over £17K to do my job. I also know a few people who were on £22K for their placement and the same jobs have been advertised for this year

You sound as though you were very fortunate, FH, either in your original university choice or your subject choice.
I do, however, know that paid placements are not available in all areas of study to all students requiring them.
